At NAMM17, Gemini announced their new MAS-1. Their first midi controller made and designed specifically to be used with clip based performance software like Ableton Live…
NAMM 17: Gemini MAS-1
Gemini’s product are all designed for DJs, but this time they opened up to the Live Performance in general by making this new clip-based performance controller, the Gemini MAS-1. Other clip-based controllers have a grid of buttons, while the MAS-1 has been designed for those who want a more DJ-centric workflow. It feels like a 4-channel DJ mixer with added control for Ableton’s devices and effects. The company says this will help the old classic DJs to get into Live’s world easier. Gemini put a full set of loop buttons and a nice BPM control section. Clip and scene control is accomplished with a set of RGB backlit buttons, therefore you can also add another clip based controller to get full control on your clips. Long 100mm faders for all the channels and the master channel are great for smooth transitions. Every channel has 3 sends for your effects.
“This product is something I wanted to make for quite some time. It’s the middle ground between Ableton Live and traditional DJing, which opens up Ableton to DJs with a workflow that innately familiar. This is the first product that puts Ableton on rails for DJing, but still allows DJs to knock down some walls and experiment with all that Ableton has to offer.” reveals Craig Reeves, Gemini Product Manager-DJ.
Audio interface and built in ergonomics
The Gemini MAS-1 has an on-board audio interface with four different channels. The controller looks very portable, but we can’t judge portability yet.
All buttons are backlit and Gemini says the hardware works great on the darkest environments. Under the controller gemini added a built-in stand to angle the MAS-1 as you prefer.
