Softube Console 1 MkII Review – Features
The Softube Console 1 MkII is a USB bus-powered hardware controller that trasforms the mixing in a fast and logical process. It offers some well designed workflow features, like a dry/wet Parallel Compression control, an Order switch, so Shape, EQ & Compression sections can be rearranged, as well as an unlimited undo for every single channel. Furthermore, we find track selection, track and I/O metering, input high and low cut filters, channel strip presets, custom presets, track copy, track grouping, filters to compressor and side chain options. Basically everything you need and more. Adjusting the sound using the default SSL 400E or loading an alternate plugin for each section is really quick and incredibly powerful to use.
One of the most unique features of the Softube Console 1 MkII is the ability to modify your channels using the 60 available Console 1 ready plug-ins, created by Softube and Universal Audio. These studio-grade plugins feature software emulations of some of the most popular and advanced compressors, EQ’s and more. Among these plug-ins we can find: Tube-Tech Classic Channel, Tube-Tech 1B Compressor, Trident A-Range, Tube-Tech PE 1C ‘Pultec’ Equalizer, Drawmer S73 Intelligent Master Processor and many more.
Softube Console 1 MkII Review – Layout
Moving on to the layout, the hardware is a solid metal unit measuring 427 x 186 x 52 mm. Despite the lower price tag, the surface remains the same as the previous version, with the same quality and precision of the controls. As you can see, we have 26 endless rotary encoders and 40 momentary button switches, supported by LED lights, arranged across five sections: Input, Dynamic Shape, Equalizer, Compressor and Output. The encoders are firm to control and provide a very nice feedback when dialling even the finest of dB increments. Using the 1-20 dedicated track selection switches makes it very fast to go from track to track, bringing the hands-on console feel to your DAW.
Softube Console 1 MkII Review – Conclusion
The Softube Console MkII provides intuitive control of EQ, compression, gate, volume and pan controls for all of your tracks, without the need for MIDI mapping or even a single mouse movement. It’s a valid hardware/software combination that allows for a creater workflow and a more authentic, so to speak, way of mixing.
